The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1941, is comprised of moret than 31,000 acres of saltwater bays, estuaries and brackish marshes at the mouth of the Chassahowitzka River.
The Chassahowitzka NWR is located approximately 65 miles north of St. Petersburg, Fla. A boat ramp, maintained by the Citrus County, provides a launching point for boats on the Chassahowitzka River for a small fee. To get there take U.S. 19 to State Road 480. The refuge was established primarily to protect waterfowl habitat, and is home to more than 250 species of birds, more than 50 species of reptiles and amphibians and at least 25 different species of mammals, including the endangered West Indian Manatee.Annual Citrus Events

Change is Coming volunteers are hosting a countywide food drive. The group is also inviting the public to join them at 3 p.m. on Jan.18 at the Beverly Hills Community Building at 1 Civic Circle, Beverly Hills, FL 34465.
Join us for a special presentation by Harold McGee, Railroad Historian, on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Mr. McGee will present an interesting PowerPoint about the trains and rail lines in Citrus County. There will also be kids activities happening on that day.
The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum will be opening its next exhibit in the John Murray Davis Rotating Gallery titled All Aboard! The History of Trains in Citrus County.
Chorale rehearsals for the spring concert begin Jan. 9 and continue each Thursday night from 7-9 pm at the First Baptist Church in Crystal River on North Citrus Avenue (a block off U.S. 19). The Chorale is open to all residents living in the Citrus County area. A good sense of humor, willingness to learn your part and a commitment to attendance are the only requirements.

The Florida Manatee Festival, a two-day event, offers visitors the opportunity to view the manatee in its own environment. The festival is hosted by the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, the City of Crystal River, and the Rotary Club of Crystal River.
