The Extension Service of the county’s Community Services Department has placed a survey on the Internet concerning the future operation of the canning center and is urging all residents to take part in it.
The survey is meant for users and non-users who might be interested in how the center is run, what kinds of services and classes are offered, and how it will support its services.
To take the survey, go to the county’s Internet Web page at: www.bocc.citrus.fl.us and click on the survey in the middle of the page under "County Highlights." Interested citizens will have until May 15 to respond to the survey.
The county commission administration recently eliminated 40 positions in a cost-cutting move, and one was the part-time supervisor at the canning center. Citing the need for more utilization of the service and a cost-effective basis for operation, the administration tasked Extension Services Director Dr. Joan Bradshaw with the job of finding a new model for operation of the canning center.
The converted old school house beside the former Emergency Operating Center in Lecanto has served the county for more than half a century and has been renovated to continue to accommodate canning and other activities.
Bradshaw said she welcomes all input and said those who don’t have a computer can use one in the libraries or come to the government center in Lecanto to her office where they can access one to complete the survey. For those who can’t do either, she said, her office will find a way to accommodate anyone interested in commenting or taking the survey.
